Termite treatment can be expensive and unfortunately by the time a homeowner notices damage, the infestation has been going on for years and the damage is more extensive then what can be seen on the surface. Usually the first sign of termites destroying a home are the little holes they create in the wood or the beginning of floors sagging. If this is caught early enough the homeowner maybe able to develop a do it yourself termite treatment plan.
There are some non-pesticides and natural ways in which a homeowner may choose to try first before calling in the professionals for the elimination of termites in the home. Nematodes are a roundworm that is minuscule in size that can be sprayed into the affected areas around the home. Nematodes take on the worker termites by invading their bodies and leaving the queen and solider termites with nothing to depend upon. The workers are injected with bacteria from the Nematodes, which kills the termites. Boric acid has been used for years in the prevention of colonies of termites developing into building materials. When boric acid powder is placed in the affected areas of the home where the termites are seen, they take the powder back to the colony and all the termites are poisoned. Boric acid is a safe termite treatment to use around kids and pets.
There are also pesticide traps and baits that are widely used to feed the soldiers, reproductive termites and workers with poisons to destroy the whole colony at once. The bait is sold in stores as cardboard or wood bait materials that contain cellulose which termites find tasty. Layers of small pieces of wood or cardboard are laced with pesticides. The worker termites take the bites back to the colony and all are infected with the pesticides.
Professional treatments for getting rid of termites may include an extensive fumigation system. The home is closed down completely, tented, and then sprayed with gases to get rid of the termites. Everyone must leave the home, including plants, animals and food. It takes a couple of days before anyone can return to the home. The advantage of having a professional come in for treatments is that they can take care of the problem now and prevent the termites from returning. They use many of the same treatments that a homeowner might use but with a more advanced method, spraying deeper into the walls and under the home.
